What is it?
Tabletop roleplay therapy, often called Therapeutically Applied RPG (TA-RPG), uses games like Dungeons & Dragons in a structured therapeutic setting, facilitated by a therapist or trained practitioner.
Players collaboratively tell stories, make decisions, solve problems, and embody characters, all within a fantasy world.
In group settings, TTRPGs have shown particular benefits for clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder, with the games providing a structured yet flexible framework for addressing complex challenges like failure, breaking rules, and navigating interpersonal relationships.
It's distinct from just playing a game for fun — the therapist intentionally designs scenarios, characters, and challenges to target specific therapeutic goals.
