Is this the right place?
If you're reading this, you're probably looking for something a bit different. Maybe your child finds groups hard. Maybe they've tried things before and nothing has quite clicked. Maybe they haven’t left the house for a while, spend a lot of times on screens and you just can’t seem to motivate or inspire them. Maybe they're doing okay but you can see them holding back, and you're not sure how to help.
Little Steps, Big Adventures was built with these children in mind.
We use tabletop roleplay — collaborative storytelling and group adventure — to help children build confidence, develop social communication and learn to participate in the world around them. For many children it also helps reduce anxiety, not by talking about it directly, but by giving them a world where they can practise being brave in small, manageable steps.
It works because children want to be there. Which can be rarer than it sounds, and it matters more than you might think.
What we offer
Therapeutic sessions — one-to-one, with your family, or in small groups — tailored around your child's needs and paced around their progress. We also run holiday club sessions where children can come with friends or come alone and find their group on the day.
Whatever your child needs, we'll work out the right fit together.
Why tabletop roleplay?
Because the game does something that's very hard to do any other way. It gives children a character to hide behind, just enough — the character takes the risks so the child doesn't have to. And then, session by session, they stop hiding quite so much.
Children experience success and frustration in the game and learn to handle both in a safe, supported environment. They make decisions, contribute to a group, and feel the satisfaction of being part of something. All of this transfers. We see it happen.
Little Steps, Big Adventures is led by a paediatric occupational therapist with eight years of experience working with children and young people, alongside a background in youth work, sports coaching, sensory integration and stage acting. We are lifelong tabletop RPG enthusiasts who have had specialist training in therapeutic roleplay and seen first hand the difference it can make.
We're parents too. We know what it means to sit across from your child and want something — anything — to work.
How it works
Before anything else, we arrange a short phone or video call. This is a chance for us both to work out whether Little Steps is the right fit for your child. We want to make sure we can genuinely help before you commit to anything. There is no charge for this call.
Session Zero — If the initial call feels right, we'll arrange a Session Zero. This is a one-hour meeting with you and your child together. It's a chance for us to meet properly — for your child to meet us in a low-pressure setting, and for us to get a sense of how they communicate, how they engage, and what they might need from sessions. We'll explain the rules and expectations, answer any questions, and between us work out whether one-to-one sessions or a group would suit them best. There's no adventure yet — just a chance to lay the groundwork so the first real session can be brilliant.
The first session From here, sessions begin at a pace that suits your child. Every child's journey through Little Steps looks different — and that's exactly how it should be.
Little steps big adventure is a therapeutic service hosted and run by qualified Paediatric Occupational Therapists. This means that assessment, evaluation and goal setting is an integral part of the service. EHCP contributions, reports and more detailed assessment can be arranged on request. If there are EHCP goals around participation and engagement, this service can contribute directly to those.
